What is Nakshatra Matching?

Nakshatra matching is a core part of Vedic marriage compatibility. Your Janma Nakshatra (birth star) — determined by the Moon's position at birth — reflects your emotional nature, instincts, and life rhythms.

Why It Matters for Marriage

In Vedic astrology, the Moon represents the mind, emotions, and how we respond in close relationships. Two people's Nakshatras determine whether their emotional natures naturally harmonise or create friction. Nakshatra compatibility forms the basis of Tara Koota and Nadi — together worth 11 of the 36 Guna Milan points.

⭐ The Three Nadi Groups

The 27 Nakshatras are divided into three Nadis, each repeated 9 times: Adi Nadi (Vata): Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada. Madhya Nadi (Pitta): Bharani, Mrigashirsha, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishtha, Uttara Bhadrapada. Antya Nadi (Kapha): Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati. If both partners share the same Nadi, it scores 0 points — called Nadi Dosha.

🔍 Tara Koota (3 Points in Guna Milan)

Tara is counted from bride's Nakshatra to groom's, then groom's to bride's. The count determines the "Tara" (star relationship): Positions 1, 3, 5, 7 (Janma, Kshema, Sadhana, Mitra Tara): Generally auspicious. Positions 2, 4, 6, 8 (Sampat, Vipat, Pratyari, Ati-mitra): Potentially challenging. Both directions are checked — ideally both should fall on auspicious Taras for full 3 points.

🌙 Nadi Dosha — What It Means

Nadi is the highest-weighted Kuta (8 points). When both partners share the same Nadi, it scores 0 — this is Nadi Dosha. Traditional texts associate Nadi Dosha with potential health considerations for children and reduced physical compatibility between partners. However, several exceptions reduce or cancel Nadi Dosha: • Both partners share the same Nakshatra but different Padas. • Both share the same Rashi but different Nakshatras. • The Lagna (ascendant) or other strong chart factors compensate. If Nadi Dosha is present, consult a Jyotishi for a complete chart reading rather than ruling out the match immediately.

Common Misconceptions

Some Nakshatras are universally bad for marriage.

Reality:No Nakshatra is inherently bad. Compatibility depends on the pairing of two Nakshatras, not the quality of one in isolation. Even traditionally "intense" Nakshatras like Ashlesha or Jyeshtha have deeply compatible pairings.

Nadi Dosha means the couple must not marry.

Reality:Nadi Dosha is significant, but experienced Jyotishis recognise several exceptions based on Lagna, Rashi, and Nakshatra Pada. The full chart context matters more than a single factor. A qualified reading is essential.

The Moon Nakshatra is the only thing that matters for compatibility.

Reality:Janma Nakshatra (Moon's star) is primary for Guna Milan purposes. But the Lagna Nakshatra, Sun sign, and Navamsa chart all add nuance. A complete reading considers multiple layers of the chart.
